Ying Yang Twins storm Madison
by Rose Johnson-Brown
Madison hosted a rap concert at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Memorial Union March 6 featuring the Ying Yang Twins: D Roc and Kane. DJ Kid Cut Up and Fall Guys also played for the packed crowd. All gave a great performance, but the Ying Yang Twins blew everybody away with a variety of their hits including “Salt Shaker” and “Whistle While You Twerk.”
Since this was their first visit to Madison, the Ying Yang Twins decided to embrace our town by visiting the south side for a little shopping spree. Manager Josh Park at Villager Sportstown accommodated their large entourage as they mingled with the community at the Villager Mall.
Dale B, the Sportstown salesperson who waited on D Roc, said, “They wanted to see where the Blacks folk go to shop in Madison; they wanted to come into the community where we are,” he said. “They pass through so many cities, but they wanted to do something more in Madison.
“Since we are the largest urban wear store in Madison, they chose us,” he continued. “I tried to give them the best service I could. We don’t get famous people coming into our shop like this. I was glad to serve them.”
As D Roc stood in the parking lot, he took time to talk to youths and have his picture taken with them. Kane also chatted from their limosine. The duo’s Southern roots shone in the respect they gave their fans and in the humility they displayed in their conversations.
D Roc and Kane shared what they liked about Madison. They said they were on their way to a performance in Beaver Dam that night, but said they would like come back to Madison in the future. They added that they felt welcome in our town.
