The fourth annual El Día de los Niños event will be held Saturday, April 26, 9 a.m. to noon at the Union Sport Club, 155 Braun Rd. in Oregon, Wis.

The event is designed for Latino children and their families, and all activities will take place in Spanish. It has been a big success the last three years,  said Fabiola Hamdan, chair of Latino Children and Families Council, which organizes the event. They are working to make this year’s event even better.
El Dia de los Niños has its roots in Latin America, although it is also celebrated in Asian and European countries. It honors and commemorates the essential role of children in the future of every country.
“The event is all about reviving the spirit of the child without forgeting our heritage and culture,” Hamdan said. “This is a very well known and celebrated event in Latin American countries.”
The Latino Children and Families Council strives to make the event both entertaining and educational. Along with agencies’ and organizations’ information booths on child-care resources, medical facts and services, and other essentials, there will be plenty of activities, fun, music, games, and a variety of Latin American folk dance groups.

“We want to help Latino families bridge the information gaps,” Hamdan said. “We want them to not only celebrate a day with their  children, but receive essential and important information that will help them in many different aspects of their lives.”
Hamdan acknowledged that the event couldn’t happen without the many volunteers and sponsors they have. “I also want to thank Alfredo Razo for letting us have the event there at the Union Sport Club for free,” she said.

El Día de los Niños 2008 will have plenty of activities, fun, and games for Latino children and families. A light breakfast will be served, and it will be a great opportunity for the Latino community to come out and play. This year, for the first time, there will be a parade of nations, featuring children displaying their cultural heritage.
“We all owe it to the children, not only to celebrate one day, but to keep in mind that our children are our future,” Hamdan said. “That’s what we like to say … but do you know what? They also are our present, and now is when the kids need us the most.”
