The University of Wisconsin football team was back in action for the first time since their New Year’s Day loss to the Tennessee Volunteers with their annual Cardinal-and-White scrimmage at Camp Randall Stadium April 19.
Badger coach Bret Bielema (far right) avoided major injuries as the first-string Cardinal team prevailed over the reserve White team by a score of 28-3 in front of a crowd estimated at 22,000.
In the unique scoring system of the UW Spring Game, the White team’s touchdowns and field goals were worth double that of the Cardinal team’s. The final point totals included “rapid fire” field-goal competitions at the end of two quarters, which awarded a point for each made attempt.
The fans enjoyed hot dogs, brats, and soda and had their first chance in a long time to body paint, see Bucky Badger, and to “Jump Around” between the 3rd and 4th quarters of the game.
The only touchdowns by the Cardinal were a 3-yard run by tailback Lance Smith late in the first half and a 20-yard touchdown pass from James Stallons to tight end Lance Kendricks in the fourth quarter.
